How does diamond cut effect brilliance?

Question: How does diamond cut effect brilliance?

(Posted by: Kevin W on 2008-11-03 13:57:31)

Looking at buying a pear (tear drop) shaped diamond to be used in a pendant for my wife. At first I was looking at diamonds which were approximately 1.5 carats, but then noticed for about half the price, I can get a diamond that is 1.0 carats and is about the same size (length and width), though obviously much less depth. This diamond is about half the price. So question is, since the smaller diamond has less depth, assuming everything else is equal, will it lose brilliance when compared to the larger one? Is there any other considerations I should make before buying the smaller diamond?

It's all about correct angles and faceting so that light passes through the stone in such a way that brillance is enhanced. A shallow stone can have some marks against it and so can a deep stone. A really nice stone has little to do with size, and personally, I prefer a high quality stone to a larger stone with "issues " (inclusions, carbon spots visible with the naked eye, milky areas, poor cut, anything with less than a F color rating---that's my short list). Have a jeweler assess each stone and recommend which has the ideal cut that you are looking for and which one is the better investment.
