Can you notice the difference between a 0.90 diamond solitaire and a 1.10 diamond solitaire?

Question: Can you notice the difference between a 0.90 diamond solitaire and a 1.10 diamond solitaire?

Hi there My husband bought our engagement ring at Tiffany's and it is about a 0.90 carat solitaire. We were thinking about upgrading it in the future. But it seems that because the ring band we bought (bead set) only goes up to a 1.10 carat solitaire. Would this upgrade be noticeable, or would it be a waste of money?

Hi there. Assuming the diamond you are talking about is round in shape, then the PHYSICAL difference in size between a 0.90ct (approx width 6.3mm) and a 1.10ct (approx 6.7mm width), is only approx 0.4mm - ie less than half a milimeter! So, really fractions of difference in size, but there will be a hefty increase in price you can be sure, because as soon as you hit the 1.00ct mark, diamond prices escalate. So, is it worth the money? Probably not.

It's not going to be a huge difference visually. Mostly the 1.1 carat diamond just has a higher value because it gets over the 1.0 mark. People can say it's a full carat, instead of a fraction. I wouldn't spend the money for the difference. Good luck.

Wow. The ring he gave you came with hope and promises. The ring as it is right now means something so changing the stone makes no sense to me. If he wants to buy you an anniversary band I understand that but your engagement ring should be almost sacred. If it is about what others think of the size of your diamond then you both need to realize the importance of the the ring he gave you. Waste of money!

If you want to upgrade, look at quality rather than size. A larger diamond of the same or worse color & clarity would be a waste of money. However, a higher quality stone may not be a waste.

For just ordinary people, no, but people who study diamonds, the jeweler owners will.

I wasn’t aware that Tiffanys offered an upgrade. That is very interesting. Your question is a good question. If you were to upgrade color and clarity – you might see a visual difference. If you go to a larger carat weight, but same color and clarity then you will not see a visual difference. Where you would see a visual difference would be 1.25 carat weight. Upgrade to 1.10 would only be a ‘mind thing’, but not a visual change to your diamond. Hope this is helpful. Good Luck!
